Cyberpunk, or the Aestheticized Body of the Citizenry
This course deals with a very specific genre within the sci-fi film canon: cyberpunk. We will look at films that take as their subject the interface between machines and human organisms, with emphasis on cybernetic organisms. This course will argue that the desire in the modern West to tinker with the human body and to improve on its deficiencies arise from one of the fundamental mandates of the modern nation state: to create an ideal citizenry. The primary target of this project is the mob, or in more contemporary parlance, the working class. As realized in the cinematic imagination, this desire to better the citizenry finds different expressions in different ages with different dominant technologies. The mechanic, the biological, and the cybernetic have in turn provided stuff that dreams of the future are made of. We will look at films from all three periods while focusing on the last.
The workload will be formidable, though not unreasonable (I hope). Students should also expect to spend two hours every week on film viewing in addition to class time. |
