課程說明 |
Populism and Film
The focus will be on populism in American film, in particular strands of populist thought and sentiment that helped make film the preeminent popular form in twentieth-century US culture. These strands include agrarianism, anti-intellectualism, anti-business/government, common sense, communalism, and demagoguery, which we will pursue in a wide range of films ranging from D.W. Griffith''s Corner in Wheat (1909) to Lawrence Kasdan''s Grand Canyon (1991). Sections are devoted to the work of Frank Capra, the Thirties (films of the Great Depression), and labor. Occasionally we will venture away from narrative films into
documentaries and TV. Readings include short essays on the history and theory of populism, along with a selection of populist texts that will help position the films we watch within wider discursive contexts of US social and cultural life.
