This course has a relatively narrow range of focus: we'll concern ourselves with the early period of cinematic history. By “early” I mean the silent period, namely the 33 years between 1895 and 1927. We will examine the development of cinematic technology in terms of its contribution to the shaping of cinematic forms and styles. Due to the very nature of early cinema, we will look at different kinds of film genres, although narrative cinema will remain our main interest. This course requires some prior knowledge of film history as well as some experiences with analyzing the visual texts. Students with no previous film courses should talk to me before taking this course. |
