||This course will be divided into two sections. The first sec-tion deals with the cornerstone of Hollywood cinema, the genre film. We will use the Western as our example to look at the historical development of the genre film, its ideological underpinnings and material conditions of production. In the second section we will use Hitchcock’s and Woody Allen’s films to investigate the concept of film auteur, its contribu-tions and limitations.
There will be a screening every week, in addition to regular class meeting. So expect to spend an average of five hours per week in class. Requirements include weekly quizzes and an 8-page paper.
