課程說明 |
This course will begin with a brief overview of how film evolved since the late nineteenth century as a complex of styles, technologies, and viewing practices. However, our topic is not film history in the usual sense. Rather, we treat film’s relationship to history, and we do this in two ways: (a) how history films construct popular knowledge of past events and how that knowledge changes over time; and (b) how films can be used to understand the historical context of their production. The history we consider will be American, and most of the films we will see were made in the United States after World War II.
Students who wish to begin reading early can start with Kracauer's "Basic Concepts: The Two Main Tendencies” and Rosenstone's History in Images/ History in Words," which are both available on my websight library under secondary reading. We will also read chapters 11-13 from Introduction to American Studies (Bradbury and Temperley). |
